I received an email from a friend who is selling blouses. She asks if I want to take a look so I said, ‘Yes.’ The blouses are pretty but to me they lack that certain tender care- they look like they have not been ironed. This may not be the fault of my friend’s because she may have gotten the photographs from her supplier. But if I can help it, if they are in my care, I would have ironed them first. A long time ago when I was a teenager, I worked as a sales assistant in a boutique. The senior girls who were in charge would insist that the newly arrived blouses be ironed. After they are ironed, they are then displayed. Now when I go shopping for clothes, the displayed items say a certain something about the shop and if they look ironed, they give me a better image. It shows hard work and working hard to please the customer. The customer on the other hand will not mind if you do not sell her the item that is on display. Even though it has been carefully ironed, clothes on display are the ones the customer is allowed to have a try on them. Therefore in the customers mind, they are used items. If there is one that is still in a plastic package, sell that and the customer is happy because it is new even if it has not been ironed. In fact the salesperson is also willing to sell you the ones still in plastic packages, it would mean that they would not have to do more ironing! Oops I may have missed to say that in the case of a big departmental store, the customer is supposed to buy the clothes displayed on the rack (which only the reputable ones will have the clothes ironed) so the above only applies to the thousands of small shops that we see everyday.
